Making people laugh out loud on purpose against their will. It´s an honorable craft. Not, however, one for the faint of heart or individuals whose innards have not officially been classified by the National Geological Society as possessing a #7 T Marble Iron rating.

There are so many intangibles that can scuttle the most hardened pro´s performance. Microphones with less dynamic range than a chainsaw. The audience being better lit than the performer. Stages shakier than Donald Trump´s understanding of the term "restrained elegance." Bar blenders set on F- 86 Sabre Jet Engine Three. Hecklers. Drunken hecklers. Drunken hecklers whose beards have caught fire. Drunken club owners. Drunken family members. Drunken club owner's family members. Drunken bachelorette parties wearing lace penises on their head. Etc, etc and alas and alack, etc.

Not to mention, how and when to incorporate the latest pearls of finely woven topical material into an act destined to be thrown onto the harsh and barren soil of a crowd to whom reading is a, well, best just call it a challenge and leave it at that. Comprende?

Proper preparation can eliminate most of these distractions, relegating them to white noise in the background of a perfectly functioning routine. How? Ah hah. Well, that´s the point, isn´t it boyo? Ante up and find out. In this patented (not really) Masters Workshop, Will Durst teaches you the basic skills of maintaining and moving on. Nose and toes the same way goes. And how to do it smartly, in multiple meanings of the word. Along the way, we will also talk about timing and character and writing and publicity and the new media and representation and a furtive glimpse into the bag of accumulated tricks every true professional carries around in his back pocket.

Will Durst is a professional comic who has been called by the New York Times "Possibly the best political comedian working in the country today." He has been performing for 37 years, most of which as a national headliner, and is respected by critics and peers alike. Although, truly, at this point, he should be much more famous, and thus you should take everything he says with a grain of salt, or more precisely, a salt lick the size of a Turkish ottoman. Durst will also reveal numerous career pitfalls, all of which he didn´t just step, but lay face down and performed snow angels, which hopefully you will avoid. This workshop is mainly focused for the working comic, but all comers are welcome.
